Yoga for Stress ReductionOver 80% of Americans identify with being either mildly or severely stressed. Work, financial struggle, relationships, technology, and life changes all contribute to stress having negative impacts on the mind and body. Sometimes stress shows up in our body through poor posture, achy muscles, tight jaws, high blood pressure, adult acne or by simply increasing the symptoms of current health conditions. It can also show up in our irritability levels, communication skills, and the overall state of contentment. While it’s easy to simply tell someone to relax or take it easy actually coping with stress are not skills we are actively taught or make time to practice.

This yoga and mindfulness series focuses on stress management for both the mind and body. From a physical perspective, this class targets the stress on the body from today’s modern lifestyle. This series focuses on stretching the hips, lower back, hamstring, shoulders, and neck. It also incorporates meditation techniques that will vary from class to class but will include breathing and mindfulness practices taught in a secular format. The format of the class will vary a bit from class to class but students should expect intense stretching sometimes holding stretching postures for minutes at a time. No prior experience is required and beginners are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Participants will need to be able to place pressure on their hands and knees as well as getting up and down off the floor comfortably. The Yoga for Stress Reduction series is available at two separate locations in Lakeview and Roscoe Village. Please be advised that each class is its own separate series and they are not interchangeable including missed classes.

Revere Park

Registration fee for the series: $60

Location: Sheil Park at Lakeview at 3505 N South Port Avenue. Close to the Southport Brown Line stop. Metered and free street parking available.

Frequently Asked Questions


Who should take this course?

This course is ideal for those experiencing stress and interested in learning stress relief techniques. However, this should not be used as a replacement for any therapies requiring trained mental health professionals for conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, grief counseling, severe PTSD, or other conditions that may require treatment in a hospital setting.

What if I have never done yoga?

If you have never done yoga before, that is perfectly okay! Many people can take this course with no problem. However, participants should be able to get up and down off of the floor and feel comfortable placing their hands and knees on the floor for longer periods of time.

What should I expect?

Class format changes a bit from one class to the next. However, the class moves slowly through yoga postures and there is a significant amount of time spent learning mindfulness techniques through the body and breath to learn how to recognize what is happening in the present moment. There are often times where we learn to be still. We will practice different stress management strategies over the length of the course.

What should I wear?

Either workout attire or loose and comfortable clothing is fine. While socks are okay while we are doing floor postures, standing postures should be practiced barefoot to get a grip on the mat. We do not recommend practicing with shoes on unless you have a medical reason for doing so.

What do I need to bring?

Participants should bring a yoga mat and small hand towel. We also recommend bringing a Mexican blanket but it is not required. There are a limited number of supplies at the park on a first come, first serve basis. Patricipants at Revere Park will also need to bring two yoga blocks and a strap.

How do I register?

Please use the Registration buttons to pay online. If you are registering after the course start date, you will need to contact us as we will need to manually enter you into the system.

What if the class is full?

If you have any issues registering or see that the class is full, please contact us! Sometimes we can find additional space.

What is your refund policy?

We do not offer any refunds (full or partial), transfers, or pro-rating once someone registers for the class for any reason, including medical reasons. Please be mindful of this policy prior to registering, we are able to offer extremely affordable pricing for our sessions and ask that everyone understand this policy before registering.

If I miss a class, can I take another class at the other location or time?

Unfortunately, most of our classes are full and we are unable to accommodate for missed classes regardless of the reason. We price our series to still make our classes affordable for students with a few missed classes in the series.
